This is a newly described species, but was originally collected and tested about 30 years ago, by Dave Gillespie of Ag Canada.
It is an excellent soil predator. In side by side comparisons it is about 50% more effective at Fungus Gnat suppression than Hypoaspis miles. Like Hypoaspis, it is an excellent thrips control, feeding on all types of soil pupating thrips, such as the Western Flower thrips.
This mite tends to be more surface-oriented than H. miles and has proven to be better suited for coco-fiber mats and rock wool.
It was re-discovered by Warren Bond of Applied Bio-nomics and described by Fred Beaulieu of Ag Canada.
